NM Couplings for Mixers & Conveyors

For mixers and conveyors, starting load and shock can be as important as steady running torque.

Mixers and conveyors can have deceptively modest running power while demanding much more attention during start-up. Settled product, a loaded belt or a process jam can raise the torque seen at the coupling. The NM table gives nominal ratings; do not treat that number as an assumed overload capacity.

Describe the start, not just the motor.

Tell us whether the machine starts empty or loaded, whether there are frequent starts and stops, and whether reversing is part of normal operation. If a VFD controls acceleration, include that. These details help decide whether a nominal torque screen is enough or whether the duty needs a more conservative review.

Bore capacity can become the practical limiter.

Conveyor and mixer shafts are sometimes large relative to motor power. After screening torque, compare the required bore against d max. If the bore pushes the selection up a model size, check the larger D and L dimensions against the available guard and shaft spacing before machining the hubs.

Loaded starts

Say whether product is already in the machine when the drive starts.

Flag routine direction changes; do not treat them as steady one-way duty.
